Questions about Run Time Errors
coming soon...

Q.  Please change the SP500 index symbol for real time models
A.  Both ^SPX and ^GSPC represent the SP 500 index. But ^GSPC is real time while ^SPX has 20 minutes delay. If you are using the RT Pro version, please change as follows:
Step 1: Go to menu File | Add or Delete Market Indexes. Type SP 500 Index to the Index name box; Type ^GSPC to the Index symbol box, click Add button. Please enter the exact name.
Step 2: Go to menu Model | Change Models, change the associate index of your real time models from ^SPX to ^GSPC. If your real time models are associated with other indexes, no changes needed.

For end-of-day models, ^SPX is still available. You may change to ^GSPC as well, but not required. If you do not need ^SPX any more, you may delete it by going to File | Add or Delete Market Indexes.

Q.  I downloaded the demo but got an installation error, why?
A.  When setup begins, the follow errors occur:
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications".
Solution:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive(assuming your CD Drive is E).
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
expand E:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand E:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

Q.  What is Dual Analytics?
A.  Starting with V9.7 released in 2005, DeepInsight runs dual analytics on every stock model to increase the accuracy of the trading system. The primary approach is using an Expert System to analyze trading patterns. The second approach is using classic technical analysis. A trading decision is then made based on the results from both approaches. ( screen shot ).
The sophisticated decision-making process is not only objective, it is also far more accurate than other trading systems which usually make trading decisions based on a single indicator or one formula for all approach.

Q.  Can I test the software before buy?
A.
Yes. Please click the Download link of this web site to download the evaluation version.

Q.  I know little about computers and artificial intelligence, can I use the software?
A.  Yes. DeepInsight is designed for individual investors and professional traders. The complex technologies and algorithms are put behind users. No learning needed, most users can work with it immediately. Also most of the process is automated. You will get the analysis results with only a few mouse clicks.

Q.  What is an Expert System?
A.  An expert system is a sophisticated computer program that can make intelligent or best possible decisions based on historical experience, accumulated knowledge and mathematics. Expert systems are suitable to handle extremely complex but specific problems, such as investment decisions, Stock/bond/currency trading, long-term weather forecast, and speech recognition etc.

Given enough data and computing power, an expert system can find the best possible solution via exhaustive search and comparison. IBM's Deep Blue(which defeated the reigning world's chess champion in 1997) is a perfect example that how smart and powerful an expert system can be.

A.  This FAQ page is expanding daily. You can find answers or solutions for most of your questions. If not, please email your questions to support@deepinsight.com. Tech support is available via email from 9am to 9pm, 7days a week.

Q.  What is a stock model?
A.  To mathematically analyze a stock, DeepInsight creates a math model in the computer to represent the stock. The math model consists of a neural network, the stock's historical trading patterns, effective technical indicators, associate index and industry name etc. The model contains the most important factors by which the stock prices may be influenced. By such thorough and scientific analysis, better trading decisions can be made.

Q.  Should I use Swing trading or Trend trading?
A.  Swing models are more accurate than Trend models for most stocks. Swing models usually trade more often and generate higher returns as you can see in walk forward test. If you prefer to hold positions in long term, select Trend Trading. Otherwise, select Swing Trading.

Q.  How to select the associate index?
A.  The associate index is the major market index that its performance is comparable with the performance of the stock. In the US, the SP500 index is widely followed by institutions and fund managers and is the default choice for most large-cap stocks. In other markets or countries, select the major market index as the associate index. If the index is not listed, please go to menu File | Add or Delete Market Indexes to add.

Q.  How to select the industry name?
A.  The Industry Classification Standard is from Standard and Poor's company. This Global Industry Classification Standard consists of 10 economic sectors aggregated from 59 industries, and 123 sub-industries. When creating stock models, select the closest industry names. If nothing suitable, select "Others".For example, for models such as DIA, QQQQ, SPY etc, select "Others" as the industry name.

Q.  What is model training?
A.  Inside the computer, a stock model is represented mathematically by a neural network. Training is a process for the neural network to learn historical trading patterns and other statistic information related to the stock. New models need to be initially trained 8000 cycles minimum before becoming stable or usable.

Q.  How often should I re-train models?
A.  Once a week or more often.

Q.  How often should I re-optimize models?
A.  Once every 6 months or more often. The optimization is a process for the system to find the best trading strategy. As new trading data added to the system every day, the previously found trading strategy may no longer be the best. To run re-optimization, please check the auto-optimization box during training. Please note that the trading history may be modified after re-optimization. If you want to synchronize your real positions with the system, please go to menu Model | Manually Change Trading Records.

Q.  Does it have negative impact with over-training?
A.  Most models become stable after about 10,000 training cycles. Further training does not improve the accuracy much, although it has no negative impact.

Q.  I trained the model again and again, and still get poor performance, why?
A.  Change the trading style from Trend to Swing or vice versa, re-train the model with Auto-Optimization. If performance is still poor, don't use the model. Not every model works well with the system. If a stock moves randomly, theoretically all analysis will be meaningless. With walk forward test, you can easily find it.

Q.  Walk Forward Test produces different results, why?
A.  In the walk forward test screen, if you change the "Average Transaction Fee/Share" to 0, the results should be very close to the ones in Daily Analysis and Recommendation screen.

Q.  How to change Swing models to Trend or vice versa?
A.  Go to menu Model | Change Models.

Q.  How to run models group by group?
A.  First of all, go to menu Model | Create Model Groups, create a group, add models to the group. Next time you download data, run training, run Daily or Live analysis, the group name will appear in the drop-down box in various screens. Select the group name to run.

Q.  How to add market indexes?
A.  Go to menu File | Add or Delete Market Indexes.

Q.  How to add industry names?
A.  The software comes with 59 industry names which should cover most of the global business. This classification standard is from Standard and Poor's company. Users can not add more.

Q.  Some of the models trade too often, how to adjust?
A.  If the Buy/Sell threshold values are too low(close to zero), the model may make more trades than you want. Please go to Walk Forward Test, adjust the trading strategy, ie, increase the value of Buy threshold and decrease the value of Sell threshold. Retest and Save.

Q.  Can not download data, why?
A.  If you can not download data for any stocks, please re-install Microsoft Internet Explore(IE) V6 or later. IE can be downloaded free from www.microsoft.com.
If you can not download data for some stocks, please check the stock symbols and try again after 8pm EST.

Q.  My download stopped after a number of stocks, why?
A.  If the download starts with normal speed and then slows down or stops after a number of stocks, a possible reason is that some Internet Service Providers set a download limit from time to time.
If this happens all the time, you may divide your models to groups with each group containing 20 stocks or less. Then download data group by group. You can create groups by going to Model | Create Model Groups.

Q.  What time is closing data available?
A.  Audited closing data should be available around 8 pm EST. When you select "Before 8 pm EST" in the download screen, you will get intraday data with 20 minutes delay.

Q.  How to check historical data for individual securities?
A.  Please go to menu File | View Historical Data.

Q.  How to manually change data?
A.  Please go to menu File | View Historical Data, select the stock, drop the cursor to the data table and change it.

Q.  I see incorrect data, how to replace the whole historical data set?
A.  If you select "3 Years" option in the data download screen, you will re-download the past 3 year data and replace the data set in your computer. There is no need to do this unless you see incorrect historical data. If you use auto-fill, it downloads the missing data and updates the current data.

Q.  How to import MetaStock data?
A.  Please go to menu File | Import MetaStock Data. Your matastock data files MUST be put in a folder, named Data. For example, C:\MyData\Data\ or C:\MetaStock\Data\. If the last folder is not \Data\, importing can not be done.

Q.  How to import data from ASCII files?
A.  The program comes with several pre-defined ASCII data formats, located in C:\DeepInsight\HistoricalData\ and C:\DeepInsight\UpdateData\. Please open them with NotePad and compare with your own data. If your data has a different format, you can not use these pre-defined formats. Instead, you need go to File | Add Historical Data Format to add one that matches your own. For details, please read the manual chapter - Import Daily Data | Add Historical Data File Format.
To import data, go to menu File | Import Historical Data from Files.
Historical Data: one stock per file, import stock by stock.
Current Data: one day per file containing all stocks, import once a day.

Q.  How to make split adjustment?
A.  Please go to menu File | Adjustment for Stock Split.

Q.  How to compact my database?
A.  As time goes on, your database may get bigger and bigger. To reduce space or eliminate data errors, please compact the database once a while by going to File | Compact Database.

Q.  I am in Canada, how to get data feed for Canadian stocks?
A.  To get Canadian stock data, an extension designating the exchange is required. When you create the stock model, add the extension as follows:
Stocks from Toronto exchange: .TO (example: NT.TO)
Stocks from Montreal exchange: .M
Stocks from Vancouver exchange: .V
Stocks from Alberta exchange: .AL

Q.  I am outside of USA, how to import my local stocks to DeepInsight?
A.  You can import your local stock data to DeepInsight via MetaStock or ASCII files. Most data vendors provide these formats for download.

Q.  What is Adaptive Model Output?
A.  It is the system's comprehensive number derived from multiple technical indicators, trading patterns and market information. Its meaning is related to the model's trading style:
If the model's trading style is Trend Trading, the Adaptive Model Output indicates the possible trend. A positive AMO suggests an UP trend while a negative AMO suggests a DOWN trend.
If the model's trading style is Swing Trading, a positive AMO indicates the model is more bullish today than it was a few days ago. A negative AMO indicates the model is more bearish today than it was a few days ago.

Q.  What is Trading Strategy?
A.  A Trading Strategy is a set of parameters that works with Adaptive Model Output to derive the optimal buy/sell decisions. When a model is trained the first time or re-optimized whenever, a trading strategy is automatically derived. You may test different trading strategies in walk forward test.

Q.  What is Long Signal?
A.  In DeepInsight, Long signals are as follows:
Buy: Time to buy
Hold: Hold the long position
Sell: Time to sell
Avoid: Stay away

Q.  What is Short Signal?
A.  In DeepInsight, Short signals are deduced from Long signals as follows:
Long Buy -> Short Cover: time to cover the short position
Long Hold -> Short Avoid: Avoid any short sell
Long Sell -> Short Sell: time to sell short
Long Avoid -> Short Hold: Hold the short position
Please note that shorting stocks is very risky and may not be suitable for non-professionals.

Q.  What is Walk Forward Test?
A.  Walk Forward Test simulates the real life trading situation. It goes back one year and then walks forward to the current day. Stock and index data are added to the system day by day just like in real life. With walk forward test, users can clearly see the day to day trading activities and accuracy of the model.

Q.  How to make Walk Forward Test run faster?
A.  If you uncheck the "Show progressive chart" in the walk forward test screen, it will run faster.

Q.  Trading signal is inconsistent with 1-3 day prediction, why?
A.  The prediction is a day to day forecast and may change every day. Trading signals, however, are based on longer term strategies. So in some cases, you may see the stock is predicted to go down or flat in the next 1-3 days while the long trading signal is still Hold.

Q.  What is Auxiliary User Indicator?
A.  If you like a specific technical indicator and want to check it daily, you may select it as the Auxiliary User Indicator by clicking the button in the WatchList screen. The selection or change of the Auxiliary User Indicator does not affect the model at all.

Q.  What is Mechanical Signal from User Indicator?
A.  The trading signal generated by the Auxiliary User Indicator. You may compare the trading signal generated by the model (Long Trading) with the Mechanical Signal, and get a better idea or confirmation. In most cases, the trading signals issued by the model are far more accurate than the Mechanical Trading Signals.

Q.  How to associate my own notes with individual stocks?
A.  In the Daily Analysis screen, click the cell button in the "Notes" column to open a message box, type your notes and then save.

Q.  Do I need re-training when run intraday analysis with timer?
A.  No.

Q.  How to get Daily analysis before market close?
A.  You can run Daily Analysis during market hours. If you use the timer function, the system will automatically update the data and run the analysis at the time span you set. If you run it manually, make sure to download intraday data by selecting the "Before 8pm" option in the download screen, before Starting daily analysis.

Q.  What is a Tracking Index?
A.  Exchange traded funds (ETFs), such as QQQQ, DIA, SPY, are very popular. Each ETF is a basket of stocks that is designed to generally track an index—broad market, sector-specific or international trades like a single stock. The unique combination of many of the best features of other investments presents financial opportunities for both individual and institutional investors.
The price movement of ETFs is determined by the underlying stocks. Traditional technical analysis can not be effectively applied to these ETFs.
Now DeepInsight provides its users a powerful and sophisticated approach to analyze and to trade ETFs. You can create a Tracking Index in DeepInsight to mirror the real ETF. DeepInsight will analyze the underlying stocks of the tracking index and combine all stock models to make the final judgment. This is ground-up analysis and offers significant advantages over direct analysis on ETF. It is more reliable and more accurate.

Q.  How to create a Tracking Index?
A.  Please go to menu Model | Create Tracking Indexes, and create it as follows:
Step 1: Type the new tracking index name to the top text box and click the button.
Step 2: Add component models to the index. If the component models do not exist, create them first.
Step 3: Assign percentage to component models by entering the percentage directly to the table. The total value in the <% of Index> column should be equal to 100%.

Q.  How to create a Tracking Index for NASDAQ 100?
A.  Step 1: Create the NASDAQ 100 stock models by going to Model | Create Models in Bulk.
Step 2: Create the Tracking Index by going to Model | Create Tracking Indexes. Add component models to the index.
Step 3: Assign percentage to component models based on the composite from this site:
NASDAQ 100 Composite
Please note that there is no need to adjust the percentage until there are big changes.
The tracking index for NASDAQ 100 is for analysis and prediction only. It may give you a better idea what directions the index may move. To trade the index, however, you may create a stock model of QQQQ.
